Mr. Pink: A Ray of Hope- Lesbian/Transgender Talent Show

Female-to-male transgender issues, HIV Awareness, and Global Warming were the timely issues brought stunningly to the public eye at this spectacular and groundbreaking event sponsored by the Federation of Sexual and Gender Minorities of Nepal. The elegant, new Rastriya Naachghar Performing Arts Center was the ideal venue to house an estimated 700 guests, which included press, volunteers, local VIPS and a large, enthusiastic crowd of supporters. Twenty-two female-to-male transgender and lesbian participants competed to be chosen as “Mr. Pink,” their official community representative, with carefully prepared statements as well as extemporaneous answers to questions from a panel of distinguished judges. Interspersed between these more reflective portions of the program, male-to-female transgender dancers in resplendent costume dazzled the audience with both classical Nepali and modern dance performances. Pageantry, competitive suspense, community spirit, and important social concerns blended at this first-of-its-kind event to create a huge and heart-warming success for the LGBTI community and Nepal.
