Sexual and Gender Minorities meet Prime Minister

 

Representatives of sexual and gender minorities met Prime Minister Madhav Kumar Nepal today at the party office of Nepal Communist Party (UML), Balkhu. The community members shared their problems, the implementation status of the Supreme Court’s 2007 decision  and citizenship for sexual and gender minorities as per their gender identity. They also demanded employment opportunity, an ease in security checks,  and other difficulties  these minorities facing due to their different identity and orientation. In the meeting constitution assembly member Sunil Babu Pant, senior leaders Jhala Nath Khanal and Iswor Pokharel were also present. During half an hour of meeting, community members explained the situation of discrimination and stigmatization by society, family, state and the other sources. CA member Sunil Babu Pant urged the government to support community members who are excluded from all sections of society. He also shared the case of the expulsion of Bhakti Shah, who is transgender for her alleged ‘unnatural act’ by the state, who is transgender. He expressed gratitude to the present government for its support of community member and requested an earmark of more funding for the community.
